How to read this: Diameter is reported by manufacturers inconsistently (some list inner diameter, some outer, some a class like 4mm/5mm/.166/.246). We use each brand's headline diameter figure where smaller = skinnier = better penetration and wind resistance; treat it as an approximate cross-brand guide.

Arrow buying guide
- What's the most important arrow spec?
- Straightness tolerance. A ±.001" shaft is sorted far tighter than a ±.006" shaft and will hold groups better at distance. For competition it's worth paying for; for close-range hunting ±.003" is plenty.
- How do I choose arrow spine?
- Spine (stiffness) must match your draw weight, draw length and point weight — use the manufacturer's spine chart. Cutting a shaft shorter stiffens it; adding point weight weakens it. The wrong spine flies poorly and can be unsafe if far too weak.
- Skinny or fat shafts?
- Skinny micro-diameter shafts (4mm, .166, .204) penetrate better and buck wind — ideal for hunting and outdoor target. Fat shafts (e.g. .246) are for indoor target, where catching a higher scoring line matters more than wind.
- Are expensive arrows worth it?
- For competition, yes — consistency is everything. For learning and close-range hunting, mid-priced shafts like the Gold Tip Hunter XT deliver most of the performance at a fraction of the cost.

28% weightThe maximum wobble in the shaft, e.g. ±.001". Straighter shafts fly more consistently and group tighter, especially at distance. The single most important arrow spec for accuracy.
Price / Dozen
21% weightBare-shaft price per dozen. Value scoring rewards shafts that deliver tournament consistency without tournament pricing.
Shaft Diameter
14% weightSkinnier shafts cut the wind and penetrate deeper (great for hunting and long range); fatter shafts catch more lines for indoor target scoring.
Weight Tolerance
14% weightHow closely matched the shafts are in grain weight. Tighter sorting means more consistent arrow-to-arrow trajectory.
Spine Options
12% weightHow many spine (stiffness) options the model offers. More choices mean you can tune the shaft precisely to your bow, draw weight and point weight.
Material
