Compound Archery Confirmed for the 2028 Olympics — a Historic First
The International Olympic Committee has added a compound mixed team event to the archery programme at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. It is the first time a new bow style has joined the Olympics since archery's reintroduction in 1972.
Twelve mixed teams — 24 athletes — will contest the first-ever Olympic compound medal, lifting the total archery medal count to six alongside the five existing recurve events. World Archery has confirmed the compound mixed team will open the archery medal programme in Los Angeles.
The decision is a landmark for a discipline that has long dominated the World Championships, World Cup and World Games but had never had an Olympic stage. It instantly reshapes the goals of the world's top compound archers, from Mike Schloesser and Mathias Fullerton to Andrea Becerra and Sara López.
